Opening SJE to All

Past As Prologue

For over 150 years, St. John’s Episcopal Church has been a spiritual beacon in the heart of Grand Haven—welcoming all, standing for justice, inclusion, and radical love.

Now, it’s time for the next step in our journey. Through our Opening SJE to ALL campaign, we’re raising $500,000 to ensure that every person—regardless of mobility or ability—can fully participate in the life of our church.

This is about more than bricks and mortar. It’s about living our values!

You can read more about the campaign in this Case for Support.

Accessibility

If we value every human being, then those with mobility concerns should be able to, at the least, enter our worship space and access all levels of our property. In order to become truly welcoming to ALL people we have embarked on a Capital Campaign to eliminate the barriers that people in our community face in using our building.

Challenges

The current design of our building poses a significant challenge for members of our community who have mobility issues, hindering their ability to participate fully in activities. Addressing the accessibility issues would also benefit Sunday School children and choristers. The space is also utilized by outside groups like Al-Anon and Samaritas Counseling Services, but the lack of accessibility hinders that work. And if we were truly accessible to all people, we could have even more utilization of our lower level as a low-cost hub for nonprofits and community agencies that serve those in need and at the margins—those God treasures the most.

Solutions

We’ll install an elevator to make our lower level accessible to everyone—opening it up to children, choirs, and the expanding number of community groups we host.

We’ll build a fully ADA-compliant ramp at our main entrance—so the first message people receive is that they matter, and they belong.

And we’ll rebuild our East Parking Lot, adding more spaces and making it ADA accessible—ensuring that those who come to us can do so with ease and dignity.

Why This Matters

We want to be clear, this is not about our own comfort. It is about removing barriers that exclude and increasing the capacity of our building to be a community hub for groups that serve all people, no exceptions.

This is our chance to say, loudly and clearly, that St. John’s is open to ALL. But we can’t do it without you.

How I Can Help

This extraordinary effort here at St. John’s Episcopal Church will not be possible without extraordinary support. We are asking the congregation, the community, and other stakeholders to prayerfully consider making a sacrificial pledge to the campaign, payable over three years. The suggested giving levels below are based on those of similar campaigns; please know that every gift, regardless of size, is deeply appreciated.

Through our efforts, and with God’s grace, we will have success in securing the resources necessary to fulfill our hopes for our church building and remove the barriers that prohibit full access to our buildings.
