SJE KIds' CHOIR

SJE Kid's Choir

The Kids’ Choir at St. John’s is a joyful, welcoming, and low-pressure way for children to grow in faith and music together. This choir is designed as a casual gathering rather than a formal choir school—focused on participation, community, and the delight of young voices offering praise.

The Kids’ Choir is led by Katy Couch, a volunteer music teacher with decades of experience working with children and young people in music. Under her guidance, children learn songs, explore rhythm and melody, and gain confidence singing together, all in an encouraging and age-appropriate environment.

Most weeks, children receive Communion with the congregation at the 10:45am Sunday liturgy, and then leave immediately afterward to rehearse until 12:15pm, roughly when Coffee Hour concludes. Once a month, the choir also gathers for a longer rehearsal during Sunday School time at 9:30am. Throughout the year, the Kids’ Choir regularly offers music in worship, enriching our services with the energy, sincerity, and faith of young voices.

No auditions, prior experience, or special training are required—just a willingness to sing and participate.

About the Canterbury Choir

In the past, St. John’s was home to the Canterbury Choir, a more formal choir school rooted in the historic Anglican choral tradition. Canterbury Choirs are modeled on English cathedral choir schools and are designed to provide children with structured musical training alongside regular participation in worship.

Our former Canterbury Choir followed the methods of the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM), an international organization dedicated to the formation of church musicians through graded instruction in sight-singing, music theory, and vocal development. Choristers worked through a structured curriculum, earned certificates and medals, and sang regularly in liturgies and concerts as part of a disciplined choral program.

While the Canterbury Choir is not currently active, we remain deeply committed to that tradition. If interest rebuilds among families and community children for this level of musical education and choral formation, we would be excited to explore reopening the Canterbury Choir at St. John’s.

If you are interested in your child participating in a potential future Canterbury Choir program, please contact Dr. Peter Kurdziel at pkurdziel@sjegh.com or Fr. Jared Cramer, Rector, at rector@sjegh.com.
